It all started off with Mrs. Kathy, his mom, telling me we were going out to eat at this new, swanky restaurant in Macon. As I was getting ready, Kyle told me that his parents have rented us a car and driver to take us to the restaurant. (You’d think I would catch on…but no) A bit later, Mrs. Kathy told called me down so I hurried down the stairs to an empty den. So I walked outside, and the first thing I saw was Kyle next to the car with a bouquet of flowers. I’m thinking, “Is this an extension of Valentine’s?” Kyle handed me the bouquet and five letters numbered one through five. He said, “Read each letter consecutively and don’t skip ahead.” He told me he loves me and shut the door to the car, where I would ride alone for a while. I read the first letter, which said to go to the place where “I first told you that I love you.” The driver drove to the Browns’ driveway. I walked to the back, where I saw in the gazebo a blue candle. As I approached the candle, I saw camellias (from Mrs. Galemore’s yard–She is a close family friend) around a letter. The letter spoke about the blue candle and how it symbolized our friendship which grew into love. It had a Bible verse about friendship and the bond we have with Christ in love. He signed it, “Love, Kyle.” (By this point, I knew something was up, but still doubted…). The next step told me to go to the park where we used to picnic when I was fifteen. A pathway of candles led down to a picnic table with the picnic cloth draped over it with flowers, a yellow candle, and the next letter. I read the letter which spoke about the symbolism of the yellow candle, faith and hope, and another Bible verse. He signed it saying that he will always have faith and hope in me. (O.K., so the tears came, I think I know what is about to happen now). The next letter took me to the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church. I saw at the end of the aisle on the altar another candle and a letter. This candle was white and represented our purity. Again, he included a verse about purity, signing it, “Only Yours, Kyle.” (now the tears were rolling). The next step led me to Charlie Walker’s house (This is where we met, First Love Ministries. Mr.Charlie is Kyle’s mentor.) Of course, it is Saturday night, and everyone was there. Mr. Charlie met me with a green candle. He prayed for Kyle and me. He handed me the letter and I read about how the green candle represents spiritual growth. It had another verse about the importance of being my spiritual leader. He wrote a prayer for me in the letter and signed it. The next letter led me to where he gave me my necklace (when I turned sixteen), which was Henderson Village, a beautiful bed and breakfast. The driver drove up to one of the plantation houses where and from a distance, I saw Kyle pacing on the front porch (At this point, I had tried to dry my tears, and I was giggling with excitement.) Kyle met and escorted me to a candlelit room with a fire roaring, red candles and beautiful camellias on the mantle. We continued to a sofa where there was a leather journal with handmade pages. The journal was opened, on one side was two red roses, two roses represented the two of us, and the red represented love. On the right side, there was a picture of the two of us from freshman year. He proceeded to tell me about the journal and how he wants us to write in it on special days, like on our wedding day, the day we have kids, and to pass it down to our kids. He turned the page and read the last letter which corresponded with the last red candle. The letter began with a Bible verse about love and marriage. He concluded by tying in all of the candles and their meanings and how it takes all of these qualities to have love. This letter he did not sign. I looked up as he dropped to one knee, and asked…”Charley, will you marry me?” Of course I said “YES!!!” There was a horse-drawn carriage waiting to take us to dinner and we had a gourmet dinner at the Langston House Restaurant.
